The disability-adjusted life years (DALY) measures the burden of disease from mortality and morbidity. One DALY can be thought of as one lost year of “healthy life” due to causes like inadequate sanitation or water supply. DALY is calculated as the sum of the Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality in a population and the Years Lost due to Disability (YLD) for people living with a health condition or its consequences. Leading causes (2012) are ischaemic heart disease, respiratory infections and strokes. Data shown is DALY due to all causes for all age groups. The data is published annually by the WHO.
